Valleys in Himachal Pradesh

Valleys are the important feature of Himachal Pardesh. Giographically they are the places where human civilization has flourished in this mountainous region. Some of the important valleys are found in Himachal Pardesh.

Satluj Valley:-

A long valley has been formed by the Satluj river from Shipki Kinnaur to Bilaspur. The river enters in to Indian region near Shipki. This river has divided the Dhauladhar range, Pirpanjal Range, Greater Hiamalaya and Zanskar ranges. The Towns like Bilaspur, Rampur and Bhabanagar are located along the Satluj River in this valley.

Kiara-dun Valley:-

This valley is situated in the South – Eastern corner of the state It is also known as ‘Paonta valley’ after the town which lies in the valley. This is located in the Markanda and Dharti ranges. Jamunariver separates it from Dehra-Dun. A greater part of Kiarda-dun valley which is plain falls within the Cis-Giri division and a very small part in a corner spreading across the Giri falls in to the trans-Giri division.

Kullu Valley:-

This is a broad open valley formed by the Beas river between Mandi and Manali. This valley is famous for the beauty and its majestic hills all covered with pine & Deodar forests and extensive apple and other fruit orchards. The Valley is also known as Beas River Valley. Kullu Valley is in the mid of the range of PirPanjal, Lower Himalayas and Greater Himalyas. This valley is approximately 75 kms in length and about two to four kms in width and ends near famous Rohtang, around 25 kms North to Manali. The town of Mandi ,Kullu, Bhunter, Manali are in this valley. Naggar Castle, Nehru Kund, Roerich Art Gallery, Hadimba Temple and hot water springs are the main attraction of this valley.

Kangra Valley

This is an extensive dun type valley located between the Dhauladhar range in the North and the shivalik hills in the south. The important towns of this valley are Baijnath, Palampur, Kangra, Nurpur and Dharamshala Shoba Singh Art Gallery (Andretta), Shiva temple (Baijnath), Tibetan government in exile (Mcleodganj), ChamundaMandir,Brajeshwari temple and (Sandeepani Himalaya) Tapovan are the famous attraction of Kangra valley.

Chamba Valley:-

Chamba Valley is also known as Ravi Valley because it is associated with the river Ravi. Although this valley is quite unexplored, but now the means of communication have made inroads in to the remote parts of this valley. The Chamba valley is famous for its history and temples located at different sites of the valley. The medicinal herbs and varieties of flowers are spread by the nature to the valley. The popular towns located in this valley are Chamba and Bharmaur, the other tourists places are Dalhousie and Khajjiar.

Lahaul and Spiti Valley

The Lahul valley is situated to the north of the Pirpanja Range and greater Himalaya ranges. It is made up of the rivers Chandra and Bhaga till Tandi and Chenab from Tandi to Udaipur, down towards which lies the famous Pangi valley in Chamba district.The Lahaul and Spiti valley is dry and cold valley and is compared to the cold desert of Leh and Laddakh. Pin valley is the tributary of Spiti valley in the transHimalayan Zone.

Sangla Valley:-

This is also Known as Baspa Valley formed by river Baspa in Kinnaur. The Baspa river flows in this valley approximately Ninty five kms. At the head of the valley lies the high altitude Chung shakhago pass. The Prominent vegetation found in the Baspa or Sangla Valley is deodars, firs, blue pines, silver birch are in the upper zones. The valley is a rich producer of frits like apple and dry fruits and many other traditional crops are also vegetated over here. The people in this valley are quite rich and prosperous.

Pabbar Valley

This is also Known as Rohru Valley, drained by the river Pabbar which originates from Chansal peak South of Kinnour and its tributaries. The valley extends from Hatkoti upto Tikiri at the base of Chansal. During summer Pubber valley is quite hot. The important streams passing through this valley are Andhra Khad, Pejore and Shhikri streams. Chirgon, Rohru, Hatkoti and Sarasvati Nagar are main town on the river side of Pabbar. This valley is famous for its apple orchards, the valley is fully loaded by the apple orchards.
